Cart bridge honors Otis and Jean Brookman

A golf cart bridge on the seventh hole of the Woodberry Forest Golf Course was dedicated to Otis and Jean Brookman on April 15, 2017. The gift from former foreign language teacher and varsity golf coach Tom Bond honors the Brookmans for their decades of service to the school.
In his remarks to the large group assembled at the dedication, Headmaster Byron Hulsey ’86 mentioned the importance of the golf course in its role as a link to the larger community outside the Forest. "The Brookmans served Woodberry Forest with steadfast loyalty and faithfulness for over seventy years," he said. "The bridge named in their honor is a fitting tribute to their commitment to the cause and a concrete symbol of how the Woodberry Golf Club is connected to the wider community."
Otis Brookman began his career in 1969, serving as golf course manager; his wife, Jean, began her service on the housekeeping staff in 1973. They retired together in 2009. The Brookmans lived on campus in the Brookman House and later the Greenskeeper's House. Their sons, Gary and Bruce, still work on the golf course crew today. At graduation in 1988, Mr. and Mrs. Brookman received the Frank S. Walker Award, recognizing staff members who have performed their duties unselfishly.
