Tigers take prep league and state championship titles

Due to last week's inclement weather, the Prep League golf tournament was held concurrently with the VISAA state championship Monday, May 23 at Meadowbrook Country Club in Richmond. More rain and soggy course conditions delayed the start of the tournament until the afternoon. Because both Division 1 and Division 2 VISAA championships were being held at the same site, the tournament's 18-hole format was modified: the Division 1 schools played the front 9 twice, the Division 2 schools played the back 9 twice.

Play began at 1:30 with a shotgun start. There were 14 foursomes playing on each side, meaning that some holes had two groups teeing off back to back. Woodberry Forest was ranked second behind St. Christopher's, and was paired with St. Anne's Belfield (#3 seed) and Norfolk Academy (#4 seed).

After nine holes, the Tigers recorded a 152 (four lowest scores), slightly behind the pace set by both Norfolk and STAB. Playing brilliant golf, Woodberry scored an even par 144 on the second nine for a 296 total. STAB's first two scores were 67 and 68, but their team total put them tied with Woodberry at 296. In such cases, the teams' fifth score is used as a tiebreaker. The Tigers won (79-84), thereby earning their 29th VPL and 3rd VISAA titles.

Senior Peter Knade (72) was the low score for the Tigers. Peter earned his 4th All-Prep Honors, the second time this has been achieved in school history. Basil Boyd (73) and Andrew Jacobs (73) also earned All-Prep honors. All three golfers were also named All-State by virtue of their top 10 finish. For both Basil and Peter, this is a third All-State honor.

Coach Marc Hogan earned VISAA Coach of the Year Honors as well.

VPL results are listed below. VISAA results will be posted later.

Tiger golfers have record-setting day

Peter Knade ’16 shot a 9-hole match record 28 (seven under par) to lead Woodberry Forest to a 137-144 victory over the previously unbeaten and #1 ranked St. Christopher's. Starting with a par 3 on the fifth hole, Peter birdied holes 6, 7, and 8 before parring the difficult par 3 9th. He then finished with four consecutive birdies, holing a 25 ft. putt on his last hole (#4) to the delight of his coaches, teammates, and classmates in the gallery.

The previous record was set  by E Stinson ’05 vs. Trinity at WFS.  He shot 30 (-5).

Zach Randol ’01  shot 30 (-6) vs. Covenant at Meadowcreek GC in 2000.

With his record 28 today, Peter Knade has lowered his season scoring average to 35.56. He currently has the best scoring average in the last 30 years of Woodberry Forest golf.

Seniors Teddy Garner (36) and Bo Pettegrew (38) also distinguished themselves in their final home match. Fourth former Woodson Smith shot even par (35) to round out the team scoring.

The last time the Tigers shot under par as a team (-1) was almost 9 years ago to the day (May 12, 2007) at home against St. Chris (279-281). The last time the Tigers were under par for a nine-hole match as a team was at Collegiate in 2001 (142, -2).

The Tigers travel to Richmond on Tuesday to defend their Prep League championship at The Federal Club.

Thanks to all who attended today's match. You witnessed Woodberry golf history.

Three seniors are playing in their final home match on May 13, 2016.

Bo Pettegrew is a three-year letter winner. This season Bo's scoring average is 37.80, including an even par 35 in our previous home match vs. STAB.

Teddy Garner is a three-year letter winner and three-time All-Prep golfer. Teddy earned All-State honors twice, and in 2014 won the Sam A. Dougherty Award as the most distinguished upper classman. This season Teddy has a scoring average of 37.90, including a one under par 34 in our previous home match vs. STAB.

Peter Knade is a three-year letter winner and three-time All-Prep golfer. Peter has earned All-State honors twice. As a third former, Peter won the Thomas D. Bond MVP Award, and the last two years, he has won the William H. White Golf Prize, awarded to the player with the lowest scoring average. As the team's captain, Peter again is leading the team in scoring average (36.64). Peter currently has the 10th best career scoring average (37.55).

The best viewing spots will be on the Wall Room patio (holes 1 & 3), at Coach Dawson's house by the cart barns (holes 4-5), and on the tee box adjacent to the Keatings' (holes 8-9). You are also welcome to walk with the groups. Please be quiet when the players are hitting shots and cheer for our team.

Come out tomorrow to see these seniors and their teammates (Basil Boyd, Lamar Mallory, and Andrew Jacobs) battle the #1 team in the state.
