Varsity golf victorious over Benedictine

The Varsity A and B golfers traveled to Richmond to play Benedictine on April 11, 2017, and came away with two victories. The A group won 151-163. Andrew Jacobs and Jack Stein both shot even par rounds of 37. The Tigers are now 5-1.

The B group easily bested Benedictine's JV, 163-181. DW Cardwell fired a 38 to lead the Tigers.

After Easter, the varsity B hosts St. Catherine's.

JV golf defeated

The JV golf team lost its opener yesterday in a four-way match at Windy Hill Sports Complex.  The Tigers struggled on the narrow course, posting a 4-man aggregate score of 191.  Wills Thompson and Pipes Fitz-Hugh both shot 46.  Truett Wason shot 49.  Jack Malone and Carter Krusz shot 50.  Adam Hennegan scored a 53.  Other schools participating were Collegiate, The New Community School, and St. Catherine's School.

Woodberry wins 15th Disharoon Cup

The Tigers hosted the Crusaders from St. Paul's-Baltimore yesterday at Full Cry GC at Keswick Hall in the 15th annual Disharoon Cup golf match. Woodberry won all four games and coasted to a 21-7 win.

There were 28 match points available. Each individual match was worth three points (1 point each for the front nine, back nine, and total 18). At the same time, each pair played a fourball match worth 1 point. 

Teeing off in reverse order, senior Charles Hargrove and third former Hughes Edwards set the tone, winning 5.5 of 7 possible points. They were followed by another senior/third form pair, Scott Gullquist and Luke McNabb, who won 6.5 of 7 points. 

From there, the Tigers cruised. Fifth form roommates Andrew Jacobs and Woodson Smith found themselves in a battle in their match but prevailed 4-3 to secure the winning points. Senior captain Basil Boyd and fourth former Jack Stein easily dispatched their opponents, 5-2.

The win marks Woodberry Forest's 10th in the series, including 9 of the last 10.

The teams thank John McAllister '94 for his generosity and help with this year's match.

Varsity B Golf defeats VES

The Varsity B golfers defeated Virginia Episcopal 157-197 in cold, windy conditions at WFS. Senior Lamar Mallory was the medalist with a two over 37.

Woodberry plays Tuesday at Benedictine.

Tigers drop a close one

Woodberry golfers traveled to Richmond to play St. Christopher's at CCV-Tuckahoe Creek. The Saints edged the Tigers 151-154. WFS falls to 2-1 and next plays VES on Friday at home.

Varsity golf notches two more wins

The Varsity A and B golfers improved their records to 2-0 with wins today at home over STAB. 


Fifth formers Andrew Jacobs and Woodson Smith both shot 73 to lead the A group to a comfortable 294-310 win. Senior DW Cardwell and third former Luke McNabb fired 74's to round out the Tiger scoring. 


In the B match, fourth former Jack Stein carded a 78 to pace Woodberry to an easy 320-404 win. Senior Philip McManamy and fifth former Will Long both shot 80, and third former Hughes Edwards completed the team score with 84.

Woodberry plays Tuesday against St. Chris in Richmond.
