Alums welcome fall golfers
Dr. Stephen Chen and Charles Honey, both of the Class of 1989, hosted the fall golfers at Kinloch Golf Club in Richmond on Saturday, September 22, 2018. After golf, the group had dinner on porch overlooking the course. It was a fun day for all.

Jack Stein '19 shines in Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship
Woodberry golfer Jack Stein finished third for 18 and under boys in the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships, played at Caymanas Club in his home country of Jamaica last week. Team Jamaica came in second.

Tigers are state champs!
Senior Andrew Jacobs led the way, firing a one-under-par 70 to earn co-medalist honors. Jacobs is also named co-Player of the Year and All-State. Both Captain Woodson Smith 73 (+2), and third former Benny Haggin 74 (+3) also earned All-State honors. Fourth former Luke McNabb 76 (+5) rounded out the scoring.
By virtue of Woodberry's victory, coach Marc Hogan earns Coach of the Year honors.

Tigers finish second in VPL golf
Woodberry shot 304 to finish 2nd behind St. Christopher’s 285 at Keswick Hall today in the 47th Virginia Preparatory League golf tournament.
Fifth former Jack Stein led the way and earned All Prep with a 75. Seniors Andrew Jacobs and Woodson Smith also earned All Prep by shooting 76.
Other Tiger scores were: Luke McNabb & Tripp Law (77), and Benny Haggin (80).

Tiger golfers lose a close one
#1 vs. #2 today in Richmond.
Top ranked St. Christopher’s hosted #2 Woodberry at the CCV-Westhampton course. The Tigers shot one of their best rounds ever there 138 (+2) but lost by five strokes, 133-138.
Fourth former Luke McNabb led with the way with a one under par score of 33. Captain Woodson Smith carded a 34 (E) while Senior Andrew Jacobs fired 35 (+1) Captain Woodson Smith carded a 35, while fifth former Jack Stein shot 36. Third former Benny Haggin had a 36, and Crawford Humphreys had a 39.
The Tigers finish the regular season 11-3, 6-1 in the Prep League. They play in the VPL championship on Tuesday at Keswick Hall.

Golf wins final home matches
The Varsity A and B hosted the Benedictine Cadets and came away with two victories.
In the A Match, third former Benny Haggin fired a 34 (-1) to lead the Tigers to an easy 146-161 victory. Playing in his final home match, captain Woodson Smith shot 35 (E), while fourth former Luke McNabb's 38 (+3) and senior Crawford Humphreys's 39 (+4) rounded out the scoring.
Woodberry improves to 10-2, 6-0 in the Prep League. The Tigers conclude the regular season Friday at St. Christopher's.
In the B match, fourth former Pipes Fitz-Hugh was the medalist with a 43 (+8) to lead Woodberry to a 183-234 victory. Third former Thomas Mills and fourth former Ethan Weber carded 46's (+11), and fourth former Alex Forward rounded out the scoring with a 48 (+13). The B Tigers finish the season with a perfect 7-0 record.

Tiger golfers celebrate seniors with a win
The varsity golfers cruised to an easy win in today's trimatch vs. Bishop O'Connell and Virginia Episcopal, 150-165-200. Senior Woodson Smith and third former Benny Haggin were co-medalists with 37's (+2). Seniors Crawford Humphreys and Andrew Jacobs fired 38's (+3). Fifth former Jack Stein (39) and fourth former Luke McNabb (40) rounded out the Woodberry team.
With the win, Woodberry improves to 10-2 overall. The Tigers are next in action on Tuesday at home vs. Benedictine.
The match was an opportunity to recognize three senior golfers playing together at home for the last time.
Crawford Humphreys is a three-year letter winner. In his career, Crawford has averaged 41.30 for nine holes. A founding member of WFSPN, Crawford has been at the mike numerous times for Woodberry sporting events. He will attend Washington & Lee University.
Andrew Jacobs is a four-year letter winner. As a third former in 2015, Andrew played in six matches and was second on the team in scoring (38.75).
In 2016, Andrew improved his scoring average to 37.36. He earned his first All-Prep and All-State honors by shooting 73 in the tournament. Andrew was presented with the Thomas D. Bond MVP in Golf.
Last season, Andrew earned All-Prep and All-State distinction again. He averaged 37.19 strokes for the season and won the Sam A. Doughtery Golf Prize. During the summer Andrew was runner-up in the VSGA's oldest and most prestigious tournament for junior golfers, the Junior Amateur.
This season Andrew is second on the team in scoring (38.25) and is currently 15th all-time in career scoring at WFS. He will attend the University of Delaware and play golf.
Captain Woodson Smith is a three-year letter winner. As a newboy fourth former, Woodson had a 37.85 scoring average. His 79 in the VISAA state tournament was the winner tie-breaker that gave the Tigers the VPL and the VISAA titles.
Last year, Woodson averaged 38.13 strokes per nine holes, earned All-Prep, and again helped WFS to its sixth consecutive VPL title. Woodson was presented with the Bond Golf MVP Award.
This season Woodson leads the team with a scoring average of 38.00 and is currently 20th all-time in career scoring. He will attend Sewanee-The University of the South next year and play golf.

Varsity B defeats St. Chris
The Varsity B Team defeated the Saints of St. Christopher's today in a match here at Woodberry. The final score (top 5 aggregate for each team) was 222 for St. Chris and 201 for WFS.
Hughes Edwards was medalist, shooting a one over par score of 36.

The #2 ranked Tigers continued their winning ways today at Keswick Hall, defeating #8 ranked St. Anne's Belfield, 315-338 in an 18-hole match. Senior Woodson Smith was the medalist with a 75 (+3), followed by Jack Stein 77 (+5), Benny Haggin 80 (+8), and Luke McNabb 83 (+11).
Woodberry Forest improves to 8-2 overall, 6-0 in the Prep League. The Tigers host #4 ranked Bishop O'Connell and VISAA D II power Virginia Episcopal on Friday.

The Tigers hosted the Cougars on April 27, 2018, and came away victorious, 143-151. Senior Woodson Smith and third former Benny Haggin were co-medalists with 35's (E). Senior Andrew Jacobs fired a 36 (+1), while fifth former Jack Stein rounded out the scoring with a 37 (+2). Fourth former Luke McNabb carded a 39 (+4), while classmate Hughes Edwards shot 44 (+9)
Woodberry improves to 7-2 overall, 5-0 in the Prep League. The Tigers next play STAB on Tuesday at Keswick Hall.
In the B match, Woodberry ran away from Collegiate 154-177. Third former Tripp Law was the medalist with a 37 (+2), followed by fourth former Jack Malone 38 (+3), third former Meade Seay 39 (+4), and fourth former Brandt Garrard 40 (+4). Fifth former Matthew Durham had a 43 (+8), while fourth former Miller King shot 44 (+ 9).
The B Tigers raise their record to 5-0, and play Tuesday at home against St. Christopher's.

Varsity golf wins vs. Trinity Episcopal
The #3 Tigers took on #2 Trinity Episcopal in the cold, driving rain today and defeated the Titans 141-150.
Senior Andrew Jacobs led Woodberry with a 34 (-1). Captain Woodson Smith shot 35 (E), while Jack Stein ‘19 & Luke McNabb ‘20 had 36 (+1). The one over par team score is the lowest of the season, bettering the 142 total from Friday vs. #1 St. Christopher’s.
Woodberry raises its record to 6-2, 4-0 in the Prep League. The Tigers play Collegiate at home Friday.

Varsity golf defeats #1 St. Chris; B team also wins
Playing its best golf of the season, the #3 Tigers shot 142 (+2) to defeat #1 and defending state champion St. Christopher's by five shots.
Fourth former Luke McNabb was the medalist with a 34 (-1), followed by third former Benny Haggin and senior Woodson Smith 35 (E). Senior Andrew Jacobs and fifth former Jack Stein both shot 38 (+3). Crawford Humphreys rounded out the WFS squad with a 41 (+6).
With the win, the Tigers improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the Prep League. They next play #1 Trinity Episcopal here on Tuesday.

Third former Owen Ramee shot 40 (+5), while fourth formers Hughes Edwards shot 43 (+8) and Miller King shot 44 (+9) to round out the team score. Varsity golf narrowly loses to Georgetown Prep
Playing in difficult conditions--wind and cold temperatures, the Tigers lost by a single stroke, 208-209, to Georgetown Prep on April 17, 2018, at Lakewood CC in Rockville, MD. Senior Andrew Jacobs was low with a 40 (+4), followed by Luke McNabb '20 with a 41 (+5). The other Woodberry players scoring were Woodson Smith '18 and Jack Stein '19 with 42 (+6), and Benny Haggin '21 and Trip Law '21 with 44 (+8). Crawford Humphreys '18 (45) and Owen Ramee '21 (48) rounded out the Tiger squad.
The Tigers fall to 4-2 and host current VISAA #1 St. Chris on Friday.

The Tigers traveled to Richmond and Hunting Hawk GC, where they defeated the Cadets, 157 to 172. Senior captain Woodson Smith fired a 38 (+1) to lead Woodberry. Also scoring for the Tigers were Benny Haggin '21 39 (+2),while Andrew Jacobs'18, Jack Stein '19, and Tripp Law '21 all shot 40 (+3). Owen Ramee fired a 43 (+6).
Woodberry improves to 4-1 on the season and next plays at Georgetown Prep on Tuesday.

Varsity golf defeats EHS
The Tigers traveled to Alexandria and bested the Maroon 188-225 in the annual rivalry match. Senior Andrew Jacobs and Tripp Law '21 were co-medalists with 36's (+1). Benny Haggin '21 fired a 37 (+2), Jack Stein '19 carded a scoring 39 (+4), and Owen Ramee '21 rounded out the scoring with a 40 (+5) on the tough Mount Vernon CC track.
The victory marks Woodberry's sixth in a row again Episcopal. Since 1986, the Tigers holds a 23-5 advantage.
Woodberry now improves its record to 3-1 on the season. The golfers travel to Richmond Friday to face Benedictine.

Varsity A & B golf win
The Varsity A & B golfers won their matches vs. St. Anne's-Belfield on April 7, 2018. The A Tigers bested the Saints 158-173. Senior Andrew Jacobs was the medalist with a 37 (+2). Third former Tripp Law shot 39 (+4), and junior Jack Stein and third former Benny Haggin both shot 41's (+6). With the win, Woodberry improves to 2-1, 2-0 in the Prep League.
In the B match, Woodberry cruised to a 164-193 win. Third former Meade Seay was the medalist with a 40 (+5). Joining Seay were fifth former Matthew Durham and third former Owen Ramee with a pair of 41's (+6). Fourth former Hughes Edwards completed the team scoring with a 42 (+7).

Varsity golf loses to British Swifts
On Saturday March 31, the British Swifts golf team made their biennial visit to Woodberry Forest and came away with a 373-388 victory at Keswick Hall GC, hosted by John McAlister '94. Senior Andrew Jacobs led the Tigers with a 73 (+1). After the match, the eight students and two chaperones had a barbecue dinner at the Hogans and spent the night with various hosts on campus and in Orange. They concluded their visit to VA with a home cooked breakfast the next morning to send them onto Columbia CC, their next stop on their two-week tour.

Coach Marc Hogan earns DECADE Golf Coach Certification
According to founder Scott Fawcett, Coach Marc Hogan was the first person to earn DECADE Golf Coach certification this week.
DECADE is a course management system that uses the distribution patterns from the PGA Tour's Shot Link and the Tour's scoring data to optimize target selection. Professional and amateur golfers worldwide use the DECADE system, including PGA Tour and Web.com winners, NCAA champions, and members of both sides in last year's Walker Cup competition.
To earn his certification, Coach Hogan attended a live seminar led by Scott Fawcett, reviewed online materials, taught and used the DECADE system with the Woodberry golfers, and finally passed a rigorous, two-part examination.

Varsity golf wins opener
The Varsity A golfers traveled to Richmond and defeated a strong Collegiate team 157-163 at the Country Club of Virginia's Tuckahoe Creek course in unseasonably cold and rainy weather. Senior Andrew Jacobs was the low scorer for the Tigers with a 38 (+2). Captain Woodson Smith shot 39 (+3), while a trio of WFS golfers, fourth former Luke McNabb, third formers Benny Haggin and Tripp Law, each fired 40 (+4). Third former Owen Ramee rounded out the team with a 44 (+8)
In the B match, the Tigers also prevailed, 162-178. Fifth former Jack Stein shot a 35 (-1) to garner medalist honors. Other WFS scores were: fourth former Hughes Edwards 43; fifth former Truett Wason and third former Meade Seay, 44; fourth formers Jack Malone 46 and Miller King 50.
Woodberry (1-0) next faces the British Swifts, a touring team from the UK, on Saturday at Keswick Hall.
