Final fall 2020 matches

The Tigers concluded the 2020 fall campaign with a tie vs. arch-rival St. Christopher's and a win over Veritas.

In the match versus the Saints, senior Benny Haggin birdied his final three holes to help the Tigers to a well-earned tie, 153-153. Benny tied for medalist with Gibson Bowles of St. Christopher's with one-under-par rounds of 34.

Fifth former Coops Cooper fired a 38, and fourth former Logan McNabb continued his good play with a 40. Fifth former Bennett Perry completed the Tigers scoring with a 41. Senior John Tandberg (41) and fifth former Winslow Newton (44) also played.
 
Battling unseasonably cold, wet, and windy conditions, Woodberry Forest took on Veritas in a matchup between the VISAA Division I and Division III 2018 golf champions. The Tigers came out on top 153-172.

Senior Benny Haggin continued his excellent play, firing a one-over-par 36, to earn medalist honors. Benny finishes the fall with a 35.20 stroke average.

Junior Coops Cooper had another solid round, shooting a two-over-par 37. Senior John Tandberg overcame a slow start and finished with 40, along with fourth former Logan McNabb, continuing his fine run of play.

Bennett Perry (44) and Graham Roberts (51) rounded out the Woodberry squad.

Woodberry trounces Trinity Christian

 

The Tigers improved their record to 4-0 with a convincing 187-262 win over Trinity Christian School today.

In a change of format, all nine Woodberry golfers played and the low five scores made up the team total. Senior John Tandberg, fifth former Winslow Newton, and fourth former Logan McNabb all tied for medalist with rounds of 37, two over par. Fifth formers Bennett Perry and Coops Cooper completed the Tigers team score with rounds of 38. Graham Roberts (40), Benny Haggin (41), William Andrews (43), and Griffin Warlow (46) also played.

Woodberry plays St. Christopher's at home on Tuesday.

Fall golf defeats STAB

Using their superior depth, the Tigers won an impressive 23.5 - 7.5 victory over St. Anne's Belfield in a 12-hole match-play format. The nine singles matches were worth three points, and four fourball matches were worth one point apiece. Thirty-one total points were at stake.


In the first game, seniors Benny Haggin and John Tandberg won their fourball match 3&2. Benny took all three points in his singles match, and John won one of three points in his singles match.

On hole 4, Coops Cooper and Bennett Perry both had dramatic birdies to conclude their matches. Bennett's birdie gave him a 2-1 victory in his match, while Coops's putt earned him a halve. The fifth formers won their fourball match 2 up.

Turner Edwards teamed with William Andrews in the third game to win their fourball 5&3. Turner won all three points, while William battled back after falling behind on the back to win 2.5 of three points in his singles match.

Logan McNabb won all three points in his singles match and teamed with fellow fourth former Graham Roberts to win their fourball 4&3. Graham took two of three points in his singles match.

Finally, Griffin Warlow lost the first point in his match, then won the back and made a clutch par on hole 9 to halve the overall.

The Tigers improved to 3-0 this fall and take on Trinity Christian on Friday, October 23.

Tigers open fall golf campaign with impressive win

 

Woodberry Forest (1-0) played its first golf match in more than a year and came away with an impressive 141-158 win over visiting St. Anne's Belfield yesterday. The one-over-par team score is the lowest for the Tigers since April 24, 2018, in a win over Trinity Episcopal, 141-150.

Senior Benny Haggin was the medalist with a two-under-par round of 33. Fifth former Coops Cooper added a 34, while classmate Turner Edwards carded an even-par score of 35. Senior John Tandberg and fifth former Bennett Perry each had four over rounds of 39, while fourth former Graham Roberts shot 40.

Four Tigers (Cooper, Tandberg, Perry, and Roberts) were playing in their first varsity match, while Edwards was competing in his first home match.

Cooper Lowell led the Saints with a one-under-par score of 34.

Woodberry Forest next plays Trinity Episcopal on Friday, October 16.
