Congratulations to Bennett Dupont and Jack Dalrymple. They teamed up with Barry Brookman and Dick Clore, local members of the Woodberry Golf Club, to win a 5 team Captain's Choice tournament at Woodberry today. Each team in the tournament consisted of two students and two public members from the Woodberry Golf Club. In cold conditions Bennett and Jack's team shot an 11 under par round of 59. Spence Townshend and Billy Mott, along with club members John Deeds and Rodney Brown, also shot a 59, but lost to the Dupont/Dalrymple team in a one hole playoff. Thanks to all who participated.

Fall golfers welcome Ron Gring
Golf teacher Ron Gring of Gring Golf spent the past several days working with the fall golfers. At the end of his visit, Ron and his wife Yvette, enjoyed Sunday dinner and chapel with the rest of the school.

Golf defeats Middleburg
The golf team improved its record to 2-0 this fall with a easy victory over Middleburg 185-243 Friday. Fifth former Timothy Walter was the medalist with a one under par 34.

Golfers notch first win of fall season
Saturday the Woodberry golf team won its first match of the 2011 campaign at home over the Potomac School, 187-221. Senior Tyler Grills was the medalist with an even par round of 35.

Woodberry finishes third in State tournament
The Tigers traveled to Suffolk, VA to Sleepy Hole GC for the fourth annual VISAA golf championship. Woodberry shot 318 to finish third in the eight-team field. St. Christopher's took the title with a 308 total, behind sophomore Adam Ball's 65, which took medalist honors.

Woodberry finishes 3rd at VPL tournament
Thunderstorms delayed and interrupted the second round of the 2011 Virginia Preparatory League tournament. Woodberry began the day 13 shots behind Collegiate, and tied with St. Christopher's for second place. Even though they improved by one shot from the first round, the Tigers could not catch St. Christopher's or Collegiate. Woodberry's two-day total of 597 was just behind Collegiate's 595 (286-309). St. Christopher's won in impressive fashion with a (-3) under par second day round of 285 for a 586 total.

Varsity and JV score wins over Trinity
The Woodberry Forest varsity and JV golf teams hosted Trinity Episcopal on Friday. Despite a short weather delay of 20 minutes for a squall, both Tiger golf teams prevailed over the Titans. The varsity won 297-325 in an 18 hole match. Bennett duPont and Shep Hardison both shot 72 to the the Tigers to the win. Woodberry improves its record to 16-3.
In the nine hole JV match, the young Tigers won 171-205. Fourth former Billy Mott shot 39 to earn medalist honors. The JV remains undefeated at 7-0

Woodberry defeats Episcopal
On a warm and blustery day, the Tigers hosted the defending state champion Episcopal Maroon. The golfers battled both their opponents and the elements and came away victorious, 156-160. Fifth former Tyler Grills was the medalist with an impressive 37.
In an exhibition match, the Jr. Black also defeated EHS, 172-184. Jack Dalrymple was the medalist with a 42.
With the win, the Tigers improved their record to 15-3. They next host Trinity Episcopal on Friday.

Tigers earn road victories vs. St. Anne's-Belfield, Benedictine
The varsity golfers traveled to Charlottesville Tuesday to play St. Anne's-Belfield and Benedictine at the Birdwood GC at the University of Virginia. Woodberry came away with an impressive 30 stroke victory over St. Anne's (153-183) and 51 stroke victory over Benedictine (153-204). Fifth former Bennett duPont fired a two-under par 34, the first sub-par competitive round this season.
The wins up the varsity's record to 7-3. The Tigers next play at home vs. Collegiate on Friday.

Shep Hardison ('12) finishes second at Pine Needles
Over Easter Weekend, fifth former Shep Hardison finished second in 17-18 age division at the 4th Annual Pine Needles Junior Invitational at the Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC. Shep shot 79-70 on the 7045 yd Donald Ross layout, which will be the site of the 2014 U.S. Women's Open.

The JV Golf Team defeated Collegiate today, 165-191. Spence Townsend was medalist for the match, shooting a 38.

Tigers defeat Covenant, avenge earlier loss
On Thursday, Woodberry Forest held a tri-match vs. two Charlottesville schools: Tandem Friends and Covenant. The Crusaders had beaten the Tigers in the latter's first match of the 2011 season. Woodberry Forest avenged itself with an easy ten stroke win over Covenant, 153-163. The race for second was much closer, as Covenant edged Tandem Friends, 163-164.

On Friday the Junior Black continued its undefeated season (3-0) when the team from Benedictine failed to field a full team. The Tigers still recorded their scores, which will be used to determine this week's ladder.

Woodberry golfers finish 2nd in Wintergreen Jr. Tournament
Because of Saturday's rain, the Plantations Junior Tour event at the Wintergreen Stoney Creek course was reduced to one day. Six Woodberry golfers--Bennett duPont, Richard Hunt, William Knibbs,Charlie Moore, Billy Mott, and Timothy Walter--had to play 36 holes on Sunday. The team left well before dawn to make the 8:30 AM shotgun start.
Two Tiger golfers had top finishes in their divisions. In the 14-15 age bracket, fourth former Timothy Walter shot 81-82 to finish in second place. In the 16-19 age bracket, senior Charlie Moore shot 84-78 to finish second, just one shot behind the winner.

The Jr. Black hosted Fork Union, and the Tigers earned a 161-199 victory, improving their record to 2-0. Fourth former William Knibbs was the medalist with a three over par 38.
The JV varsity also posted an easy win over St. Michael's the Archangel from Fredericksburg, 172-205. Fourth formers Charlie Cordell and Ty Johnson were co-medalists with rounds of 42. All six junior varsity Tigers broke 50, the first time that has happened this season. The JV is now 4-0.

Woodberry Forest hosts British Swifts
The arrival of the British Swifts happily coincided with warmer temps. Since 1991, the group of eight British schoolboys have come to Woodberry Forest for an overnight stop on their three-week tour of the Eastern US. Sunday afternoon, four groups teed off at the Woodberry Forest Golf Course for singles and fourball match play. The visitors from the UK triumphed 23 to 5. Bennett duPont and James Walter each scored two points in their singles matches for the Tigers, while Shep Hardison, Timothy Walter, and Spence Townsend each contributed 1/2 point.
After dinner the Swifts joined Coach Hogan and family at the Rapp House to watch the last round of the Masters golf tournament.

Woodberry Forest loses to Georgetown Prep
On yet another cold, almost wintry day, the Tigers fell to a strong Georgetown Prep team, 358-381. Ten players from each side competed, with the low five scores accounting for the team total. The Little Hoyas shot eight over par as a team. Two of the five scores were under par. Fifth former Shep Hardison was low for Woodberry with a 74.

On yet another cool and blustery Tuesday, the Tigers traveled to Richmond to play the Saints at the Country Club of Virginia's Westhampton Course. Because the outward nine holes ends in the middle of the course, the match was set for 12 holes and par 47.
Woodberry's steady play led to 212-220 victory. Fifth former Shep Hardison's earned medalist honors with a two over par round of 49.

Woodberry Forest successfully defends Disharoon Cup
The Tigers opened their home golf season Saturday versus St. Paul's of Baltimore in the 9th annual Disharoon Cup. There are six singles matches and three fourball (better ball) matches with 21 points at stake.
Coming into the match, Woodberry had won the last three Cups, the first time that had been accomplished in the series. Thanks to the team's depth and steady play, Woodberry easily defeated the Crusaders 15 1/2 to 5 1/2 to garner its fifth Disharoon Cup.
The Disharoon Cup honors Mr. and Mrs. Leslie B. Disharoon whose personal generosity, devotion to education, and great fondness for the game of golf brought this event into being.

First Day of Matches: Mixed Results
The Jr. Black and Junior Varsity teams opened their seasons with good wins. The Jr. Black traveled to Stanardsville to play Blue Ridge at Greene Hills GC. The Tigers prevailed 162-165. Fifth former Tyler Grills led the way with a one over-par round of 36.
The Junior Varsity hosted Eastern Mennonite in their opener, and the young Tigers easily won 172-191. Fourth formers Richard Hunt and Billy Mott each carded a four over-par round of 39.
Unfortunately the Varsity group lost its opening match to Covenant, 151-155. The speedy greens of Old Trail GC proved difficult for the Tiger six. Fifth former Shep Hardison was low for Woodberry with a two over-par 38.
The Varsity will be in action again Friday vs. Collegiate at the CCV-Tuckahoe Creek course in Richmond.

2011 Qualifying--Final round & first ladder
Saturday's weather turned cold, but the Tiger gofers shrugged off the declining temps to post their best numbers of the early season. Fifth former Shep Hardison won the qualifier with a 27-hole total of 114. He is joined by co-captains James Walter and Milt Barber, as well as classmates Bennett duPont, Charles Blaydes, and fourth former Timothy Walter on the initial Varsity group.
Fourth former Spence Townsend head the initial Jr. Black squad. He is joined by Christian Dolan, Rue Hockensmith, and Charlie Moore, fifth former Tyler Grills, and fourth former William Knibbs.
The first JV squad is made up of fourth formers Richard Hunt, Billy Mott, Tim Lindsay, and Ty Johnson, as well as third formers Michael Armstrong and Banks Hagood.

2011 Qualifying: Day 2
The temperatures dropped and the competition heated up on Day 2 of the 2011 golf season. Below are the scores and tee times for Saturday's final nine holes. The low six players will play in the first match on Tuesday vs. Covenant at Old Trail GC in Crozet, VA. The next low six will play in the Jr. Black match Tuesday vs. Blue Ridge at Greene Hills GC in Stanardsville, VA. Finally the next low six 3rd and 4th formers will play in the JV match vs. Eastern Mennonite at WFS GC.
Two golfers--Tyler Grills and William Knibbs--completed their qualifying Friday because another school commitment will prevent them from playing Saturday.
